2016 Tour 1 Laguna San Ignacio, day 2

Hello whalewatchers:

We enjoyed another spectacular day in Laguna San Ignacio with great weather and plenty of whales! Once again everyone had an opportunity to have a close encounter with a gray whale. We took 12 people to the mangroves this morning on the high tide for some estuary birding and photography. In the afternoon, we took nine people to the beach on the shore of the lagoon for a nice walk. Lots of fun was had by all today. shaded seating stern w:people

2016 Tour 1 Laguna San Ignacio, day 1

Hello whalewatchers,
It is truly wonderful to be back in Laguna San Ignacio! There are lots of whales both inside and outside the lagoon. The weather has been awesome almost the whole day. And plenty of sunshine as well. It is great to see old friends again–the people from Kuyima and of course, the whales. Everyone had a close encounter with a whale today. So there were lots of hugs and a few tears of joy were shared our before lunch. This place is magical.
One of the things we try to do each year is make something better. This year we did quite a bit of work in the galley with new carpet, upholstery and some hardwood trim to spice things up a little. Outside we added some more seating and storage, and a way to create shade on the deck. Check out the new set-up! Everyone has really enjoyed  it so far.Copy of SSgalleyback-deck seating:shade

2016 Tour 1 Islas San Benito

Hello whalewatchers: We had a great day at Islas San Benitos today. The weather was perfect with sunny skies and a breeze. Everyone enjoyed the walk with elephant seals, a few fur seals, and many birds. In addition, we saw some life after we left the island–loads of auklets and murrelets, a pair of northbound gray whales, common dolphins, and a blue whale at sunset.
We are headed to one of our favorite places tomorrow–looking forward to visiting Laguna San Ignacio once again.

2016 Tour 1 offshore Ensenada and Islas Todos Santos

Hello whalewatchers: Our first day of the 2016 season was pretty exciting! We found plenty of life: common dolphins, pilot whales, and four different kinds of baleen whales: gray, humpback, a single minke, and several fin whales. One humpback whale gave us a breaching show too. It was a glorious day for weather with calm seas and almost no wind. And to end the day, we enjoyed a wonderful sunset with a green flash.
More tomorrow, Team Searcher

2016 Tour 1 Departure underway!

The day finally arrived when we could take our first group of 24 guests and two naturalists (Marc Webber and Paul Jones) and head south to Baja California for whalewatching and wildlife adventures! Yesterday was that day. We welcomed long-time friends and new ones aboard during a warm San Diego day. Denver Broncos fans cheered their team on and our international guests witnessed a Super Bowl spectacle! After an evening safety orientation, and a rousing rendition of  “Happy Birthday” to Paul Jones, the boat left the dock around 10 p.m. We wish them fair seas and over-the-top sightings!

Our inaugural pelagic birding expedition into Mexican waters, organized by WildWings, was a big success, with sightings of both target species (Ainley’s storm petrel and Townsend’s shearwaters) and much more. The itinerary included Guadalupe Island, Alijos Rocks, Socorro Island, and areas in between.

Chris Collins (at left) and Steve Howell were leaders aboard this voyage. Trip report and sightings list are attached below.

We are already looking forward to our 2017 repeat of this exciting and unique expedition! More info here: http://www.bajawhale.com/pelagic/mexico-pelagic-birding-tour/

Mexico Pelagic Birding Tour, day 9 (Dec 7)

Hello birders,

We were traveling all day today. We are headed to Cabo San Lucas for arrival tomorrow morning. We stopped for a final fish oil slick at about 95 miles south of Cabo. We attracted Least and Leach’s storm petrels; Pomarine jaegers; and Brown, Red-footed and Masked boobies–a great way to end a birding trip to Mexico!

Since this was the first trip of its kind from San Diego to Guadalupe Island and the Revillagigedo islands to Isla Socorro, we would consider this a huge success.  Two species were at the top of the list: Ainley’s storm petrel at Isla Guadalupe and Townsend’s shearwater at Isla Socorro, and we were able to locate and observe them both.

mexico pelagic cabo-pomarineWe learned much about all these birding locations and so when we return next year ,we will have a better idea where to go and a much more defined itinerary. We can’t wait to go back! Many thanks to the organization that made this happen–WildWings, John Brodie-Good, and leaders Chris Collins and Steve Howell.

Photo today is a Pomarine jaeger.

Mexico Pelagic Birding Tour, day 8 (Dec 6)

Hello birders,

For day two at Isla Socorro Island we started just after daylight with a skiff ride to Playa Blanca, adjacent to Cabo Henslow. The group had plenty of views of the Socorro wren in the 2 hours they were out in some windy conditions. We left there and circled the island for the rest of the morning, going around the north-end and down the northeast side of the island. Unfortunately there wasn’t much life. We wanted to check that side of the island in case we missed something yesterday.

We ended up 9 miles south of the island looking at boobies, frigates and terns, hoping to find more shearwaters. We worked back towards the island with the sun at our backs. We came across 3 Townsend’s shearwaters for our efforts today–a little disappointing as we hoping for more birds today.

We would consider our visit here a success locating Townsend’s shearwaters. We are headed north tonight with a day at sea and arrival Tuesday morning in Cabo San Lucas.

Photo today is  Cabo Henslow. We saw several hundred boobies leaving there early this morning. It is a very pretty location.
