Endemic desert iguana
Hello whalewatchers:
Despite all the April Fools pranks aboard, we had another stellar day with beautiful weather and lots of whales. We started with an early morning walk at Isla Santa Catalina, skiff rides along the shore and another hike onshore at mid-morning up the large arroyo. There was a most impressive reptile list with four endemic island species sighted: Santa Catalina rattleless rattlesnake (3), Santa Catalina emerald-tailed lizard, Santa Catalina desert iguana, and Santa Catalina whiptail.
Several people also did a snorkel before lunch even though the water temps were around 68 degrees--a little chillier than usual.
As soon as we left the island during lunch, we spotted a cow/calf Bryde's whale. Then the afternoon was spent watching a group of seven and a pair of fin whales that came very close to the boat, and many humpback whales.
We are anchored at Bahia Agua Verde for the night and look forward to what we might find tomorrow.
More then,
Capt Art
